Computer Network

Computer Network and Its Types

A computer network can be divided according to geographic conditions. The basic classifications of the network are LAN (local area network), WAN (wide area network), MAN (metropolitan area network) and PAN (personal area network). A LAN(local area network) is a computer network which connects various electronic devices in a small area such as network used in our Homes, shops or any single building, in other words, we can say that Local area network is computer network on any particular location. There are two types of Local area network wired local area network and wireless local area network.

Wired local area network: Connection made between electronic devices by means of any wired medium such as twisted pair cable, coaxial cable, etc. wired network uses Ethernet cables for transferring of data between various personal computers.

Wireless local area network: The communication between various computers and electronic devices by air as a medium is called a wireless local area network. The wireless connection allows devices to share without the intervention of any physical medium. There are two main types of wireless networking peer to peer network and ad-hoc network.

Types – LAN, PAN, MAN, and WAN.

Based on geographical area:
Wide Area Networks(WANs)
Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs)
Local Area Networks (LANs)
Personal Area Network (PAN)

Based on how computer nodes are used:
Peer-to-Peer Networks (PPNs)
Client-Server Networks (CSNs)
Value-added Networks (VANs)

LAN (Local Area Network)

Computer Network and Its Types

LAN is usually used for connecting two or more personal computers through some medium like twisted pair, coax, etc. Through the number of computers connected during a LAN is restricted, the info is transferred at a particularly faster rate. LAN may be a group of computers (as shown in Fig.1), that are connected during a small area like building, home, etc. Through this sort of network, users can easily communicate with one another by sending and receiving messages. A LAN(local area network) is a computer network which connects various electronic devices in a small area such as network used in our Homes, shops or any single building, in other words, we can say that Local area network is computer network on any particular location.

WAN (Wide Area Network)

Computer Network and Its Types

WAN is usually used for connecting two or more LANs through some medium like leased telephone lines, microwaves, etc. In WAN, data is transferred at a slow rate. WAN may be a group of computers that are connected during a large area like a continent, country, etc.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

Computer Network and Its Types

MAN is usually connected with the assistance of optical fibers, copper wires, etc. MAN may be a network of computers that covers an outsized area sort of a city. the dimensions of the person generally lie between LAN and WAN, typically covering a distance of 5 km to 50 km. The geographic area covered by MAN is relatively larger than LAN but smaller than WAN. MAN is usually owned by private organizations.

PAN (Personal Area Network)

Computer Network and Its Types

PAN (personal area network) is that the interconnection of data technology devices within the range of a private person, typically within a variety of 10 meters.
