What is Cloud Storage?

Storage of data over a network by means of the internet which provide services of maintenance and backup is called as cloud storage. The service provider charges the user for the facility as per the monthly rate. Data security is a major concern of service providers and users. With the help of encryption and authentication service provider are trying to solve this problem.

Storage Evaluations:

Since the start of electronic evaluation, data storage was the major concern for any kind of transaction, evaluation, and calculation.

In 1947 at Manchester university first, high-speed electronic memory was made with a cathode-ray tube for storage of bits as a dot, but each dot lasted for a maximum of a fraction of seconds and then it just fades after it. This storage needed constant refreshment.

In 1952 with the help of a vacuum channel a magnetic tape was developed, it was inexpensive and allowed mass storage of information. It was a very important development in computer and document storage revolution. The special feature of magnetic tapes was that it could store 2 million digits per tape which was an astonishing invention.

In the 1960s card, random access memory was introduced. Each card random access deck of 256 cards recorded about 5.5 MB.

In 1966 an electronic magazine featured an 8 bit RAM designed by Signetics. This 8 bit RAM was one of the initially dedicated semiconductor memory devices in the computer system.

In the 1970s Intel introduced 4 Mbit bubble memory array. It was cheap, fast and of higher density memory solution.

In 1981 Sony introduced first 3 ½ – inch floppy drives and diskettes. After various developments compact disks (CDs) were developed by Philips and Sony which were capable of storing 550 megabytes of recorded data. These compact disks became very popular in the media and music industry all around the globe.

In the 1990s digital video discs (DVDs) were introduced. The storage capacity of digital video disc (DVDs) was more than that of the compact disc (CD). Digital video disc came in both read-only and read-write formats and was more popular, highly adopted in the film and music industry. It has better video and audio quality and an improved life span.

In 2000s USB flash drives were introduced. In common language, these USB flash drives were called as memory sticks or pen drives. These drives have flash memory with a USB interface. These are used for backups, data and media storage. With the help of USB flash drives, data can be transferred from one electronic device to another electronic device with faster and greater data capacity. Also, the various drawbacks of using digital video discs such as scratch problem, magnetic erasure problem in floppy disks were removed by pen drives.

The unbelievable development came in data storage when online web gateways were designed for data and media storage. This electronic online storage is termed as cloud storage.

The cloud storage is divided into mainly three subparts which are public, hybrid and private.

Public cloud storage:

This type of storage of data provides access to multiple users. Basically the unstructured data is shared among various users despite their geographically different location. The market is highly dominated by various providers such as Amazon simple storage service, Google cloud storage and cloud storage by Apple.

Private cloud storage:

These types of storage of data provide private customization and create a more secure environment for data and media storage. The data is protected by a firewall which is a dedicated software or firmware with a set of rules. In this type of storage, the user has more control over the data such as who can manipulate the data, download the data and access the data.

Hybrid cloud storage:

Hybrid as the name suggests is a mixture of both public and private cloud storage facility, customization and a linking platform between private and public use. In recent years hybrid cloud storage has become very popular among users and a major number of customers have adopted it. The hybrid cloud storage has solved various business and management problems that the user has faced over various years.

Advantages of using cloud storage:

1. User has to only pay for the amount of memory that they are using. That does not mean it is less expensive, it is just that investment is done as per the requirement.

2. Using cloud storage is environment-friendly.

3. Storage availability and data protection are intrinsic.

4. Storage management can be easily done.

5. Getting extra storage does not require any physical effort, by simple online transactions buying of extra storage can be done.

6. Cloud storage cannot be affected by any natural disasters.

Application of cloud storage:

There are various application of cloud storage such as data backup, data storage, sharing data over the internet with security, standard interface with other networks can be easily done with easy customizations.
